KNOW YOUR EMAIL MARKETING LAWS

Email is considered as an important medium of marketing. It is the easiest way to reach a large number of customers in less time and cost. Dealing with email marketing is not very easy, you have to understand the email marketing laws before you start your campaign. Companies are constantly in competition, no one wants to be a spammer. It will damage your reputation and the customer’s perception of the company.

WHAT ARE THE BASIC EMAIL MARKETING LAWS YOU SHOULD FOLLOW?

The laws appear to be complicated, but don’t let them change your decision or dissuade you from of using one of the most effective marketing strategies. So before you decide to use email marketing briefly read through the following pointers. In the US we have the CAN-SPAM legislation. Canada has CASL or the Canada Anti Spam Law. Make sure you are aware of the laws in your location and follow them. The last thing you want is a lawsuit or pissed off attorney on your tail.

CONSENT TO EMAIL

There is a need that the targeted customer should allow you to communicate with them. Permission laws are a bit different for every country.

Permission is of two types, first, is the implied permission and the second is express permission.

Implied permission is the one when the specified person is already your customer or he is in connection with you. If you don’t have implied permission you will need express permission.

Expressed permission is when the other person allows you to interact with them by providing you with email address themselves. This can be done by inviting customers with the help of any other marketing media and then getting their email addresses with their consent.

AVOID USING MISLEADING SUBJECTS

When interacting with customers you should clearly state the subject of your email so that they will not get distracted. Spammers usually use misleading subjects to deceive people into opening their emails. A curious and creative subject line can be used but it should not contain something which is unrelated to the email or landing page. You should also make it clear that it is an advertisement message.

MENTION YOUR LOCATION

Maintain an environment of trust with your customers by providing them with current information about your location. This will help build trust and your reputation. There are a lot of spammers and fake companies in the market, people need to feel that the company they are going to work with is legitimate. Always include your physical address in the unsubscribe footer.

OPTING OUT

The customer’s choice is considered very important when dealing with email marketing. You should provide your customer with a clear and easy opt-out option if they no longer want to hear from you. Not everyone is interested in utilizing your services so you should clearly make the opt-out option seen and easy to unsubscribe from mailings.

SPAMMER ALERT

You need to monitor the activities performed with your name. If you are a popular company there is a chance someone will use your name for suspicious activities. Apart from that there is another dimension, you should maintain proper communication with a company who is handling your marketing or who is providing the product. This is important to avoid any kind of misunderstanding between you and the clients.

To use email marketing effectively constantly keep yourself updated on the laws. It is not a difficult process and the CAN-SPAM act allows you to clearly understand all the instructions. By following these laws you can maintain a trustworthy relationship with your customer.
